Welcome Back to School 2018-2019! Superintendent Letter

Dear Parents/Guardians,

It is with great anticipation and enthusiasm that I welcome you back for another incredible school year here within the Brewer School Department! The first day of school for students in grades 9 will be Wednesday, August 29, 2018. This is our annual orientation for all freshmen and they will be dismissed at 11:00 AM.  The first day of school for all other students, grades PreK-12, will be on Thursday, August 30, 2018.

Brewer Community School will hold Open House for Grades Pre-K through Grade 4 on Tuesday, August 28 from 4:30-8:00 PM.  The Open House for Grades 5-8 will be on August 29 from 5:30-7:00 PM.  Additional information on these two events can be found on the www.breweredu.org web page under Brewer Community School.  Brewer High School will hold Open House on Wednesday, September 26, from 6:00-7:30 PM.

Bus routes have recently been published on our web page under recent news, the superintendent’s blog, and under bus routes for each building.  In an effort to improve safety for our children, we have removed all house numbers from the bus routes.  The roads and times are listed that the bus will be traveling down your road.  The bus driver will stop at the locations listed on the route.  As in all previous years, I would kindly request PATIENCE and UNDERSTANDING for the first few weeks of school as we iron out the details of our bus routes for another school year. It is not atypical to have buses run 10-20 minutes late in the a.m. and p.m. routes as we get things rolling, so please plan accordingly for the first few weeks of school and as always, if you are concerned or have questions, please call the Superintendent’s office.

Yes!  We will have more parking at Brewer Community School as soon as the new parking lot is completed.  Teachers will be parking in this lot and the front of the school will be more accessible for parents that need to park and walk their children to the door.  We will be extra vigilant on using the circle for dropping off or picking up and ask that if you need to come into the school or walk your child to the door, you park your car in the adjacent parking lot.

Please be advised that Brewer Community School has two pick up and drop off times due to having two start and end times of our school day for K-4 and 5-8.  In an effort to improve the flow of traffic and school safety, we encourage you to follow the following pick up and drop off times.

Grades K-4   Drop Off Time   8:10-8:30                    Pick Up Time  2:50

Please do not arrive to drop off your grade K-4 child prior to 8:10 AM or pick up your child prior to 2:45 PM.

Grades 5-8   Drop Off Time   7:30-7:50                    Pick Up Time  2:00

Please do not arrive to drop off your grade 5-8 child prior to 7:30 AM or pick up your child prior to 1:55 PM.

In an effort to improve school safety and security for students, we encourage you to follow the following pick up and drop off rules.

  1. Parents who drive their children to BCS should use the circle driveway, in front of the school, to drop off students.  Proceed around the circle to find a clear drop-off space; don’t stop at the front doors.  Please do not use the visitor lot as a drive thru drop off lane. This will help with the traffic flow.
  2. Please pull up to the curb on the right-hand side, in the area painted yellow, and let your children out on the right-hand side of the car. If they get out the left doors, they are exiting the car into traffic.  DO NOT let kids out of the car in the middle lane; that is the travel lane, for thru traffic only.
  3. Parents should remain in the car while the students are dropped off.  If you need to get out of the car and enter the building, please park in the visitor parking area (directly in front of the school), or the parking lot adjacent to Parkway South (the lot where the digital sign is located).  You may have to drive around the circle a few times, or wait for a space to open up. Please be patient. When our new parking lot is complete, there will be much more parking in this adjacent lot for you to park.
  4. Finally, please keep in mind that student safety is our primary concern, and that these safety steps may inconvenience drivers who have to wait in their cars longer than usual.  We apologize for any inconvenience and look forward to warmer weather.

Our schools are excited to welcome you and your children to another tremendous year here in Brewer! There are lots of outstanding things happening at our schools so be sure to check out our school websites, keep an eye on your mail and email, and watch for flyers and other materials that will be sent home with your students the first few days of school to let you know about many of these exciting planned events! You can also check out my blog (linked on our district webpage), or you can check us out on Facebook– all of which are linked from our webpages.

One of the exciting new additions to the Brewer School Department is our web page is getting an overhaul and we will have a new app that can be downloaded to your phone.  The app is called Brewer School Department.  We are hoping to have this up and functioning in September. The app will help keep you connected to what is happening in our schools with snapshots of learning and all upcoming events.

As we get ready for a new school year, I want to once again draw your attention to the importance of school attendance. Did you know that absenteeism in the first month of school can predict poor attendance throughout the school year? Did you know poor attendance can influence whether children read proficiently by the end of third grade? Did you know that by 6th grade, chronic absence becomes a leading indicator that a student will drop out of high school? Finally, did you know that research shows missing 10% of the school year (or about 18 days here in Brewer) negatively affects a student’s academic performance? That’s just two days per month!

Encouraging regular school attendance is one of the most powerful ways you can prepare your child for success – both in school and in life. WE NEED YOUR HELP! When you help us make school attendance a priority, you help your child get better grades, develop healthy life habits, and have a better chance of graduating from high school ready to successfully meet all the challenges life may have in store for them! Please help us, help your child to make daily school attendance a priority! Thank you!

In closing, the Brewer School’s staff continue to work tirelessly to make our schools a place where your child wants to come each and every day to challenge themselves, to socialize, and to achieve all that they can achieve as learners! We all care deeply about the success of our children! We are lucky to have such a dedicated and caring staff whose focus and priorities are all in the right places – building positive relationships with each and every student! This year’s theme is “Every Kid Needs a Champion” where through those positive relationships we can help all students succeed. I am so proud to be your Superintendent of Schools and will also work tirelessly to make sure this strong spirit continues to thrive in Brewer! We are all so very proud to be Brewer Witches!

I look forward to another great year! Please do not hesitate to reach out to me with questions, comments, or concerns. My email is ctowle@breweredu.org and my office phone number is (207) 989-3160. See you all soon!

Sincerely,
Cheri Towle, Ed. D.

2018-2019 School Bus Routes

Please see the link below to view the 2018-2019 bus routes.  In an effort to improve safety for our children, we have removed all house numbers from the bus routes.  The roads and times are listed that the bus will be traveling down your road.  The bus driver will stop at the locations listed on the route.  Please have children that live in the same area congregate at these bus stops to be picked up/dropped off.  If your child is in PreK-Grade 2, an adult must be present when the child is dropped off and we highly suggest walking your child to the bus stop.  All possible efforts will be made to drop off and pick up at your house for PreK-2 if the bus is able to go down your road and turn around.

As in all previous years, I would kindly request patience and understanding for the first few weeks of school as we iron out the details of our bus routes for another school year. It is not atypical to have buses run 10-20 minutes late in the morning and afternoon routes as we get things rolling, so please plan accordingly for the first few weeks of school and as always, if you are concerned or have questions, please call the Superintendent’s office.
