Testing times at Brewer HS

Thursday, May 3rd, 2012

Since 1996, all Maine juniors have been required to take the SAT test each spring, which replaced the MEA tests still given at the lower grade levels.

On Saturday, May 5, students will be tested in the areas of reading, writing, mathematics, and science- which was tested in a separate section earlier this year.

Students who were looking for an added challenge this year and registered for Advanced Placement classes at Brewer High, will be taking their College Board AP Exams throughout the month of May. Options include Statistics, Music Theory, Macro- and Microeconomics, English Literature and Composition, and Psychology, among others.

In preparation for these tests, teachers are busy reviewing not only their course content with students, but also test –taking strategies, essay-writing skills, and how the tests are scored which ranges from a computer scanner to boards of college professors and experienced AP teachers. Students who perform well on the tests can receive college credit and can move directly into higher level courses in college. Good luck, everyone!

Voluntary Compliance T-Shirt Activity

Friday, April 13th, 2012

Students in Mr. Maxsimic’s Personal Finance class made Voluntary Compliance T-shirts in Mr. Merrill’s room.  They wore them to bring awareness that state and federal taxes are due April 17th.

Since April 15th 2012 is a Sunday, the tax deadline was pushed back.  But it couldn’t be set for Monday April 16th because it is a holiday observed by the Washington D.C.: Emancipation Day. That’s why the tax deadline has been pushed back to Tuesday April 17th, 2012.

Wait…What is Emancipation Day?

Emancipation Day is a celebration of the day in 1862 when President Abraham Lincoln signed the Compensation Emancipation Act.  This act freed about 3,100 slaves in the District of Columbia nine months before all the slaves were freed with the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation.  While it’s not a federal holiday, it is observed by Washington D.C. – it was declared a public holiday in 2005.
