Unified Basketball

Mr. Utterback

Mr. Utterback- Athletic Director

Staff Supervisor: Basketball

In the winter of 2015-2016, Mr. Utterback decided to pursue bringing a Unified athletic program to Brewer High School after reading about the success of the opportunities from other schools, particularly, at Hampden Academy. The 2021-2022 season will be the 7th year that Brewer High offers organized Unified activities in the winter months.

Mr. Utterback and Mrs. Snowdeal developed at Unified component with their fall cheerleading 8 years ago, and it has been a great success, providing extra curricular opportunities for children of all walks of life, so expanding the offerings through the winter months with the support of the MPA and Maine Special Olympics made perfect sense.

Mr. Utterback was pleased to expand the Unified program at Brewer High School when the Student-Athlete Advisory Council voted unanimously to support the development and expansion of the Unified program to include basketball and winter sideline cheerleading.

Following support from the SAAC, Mr. Utterback sought approval to purse grant funding with the blessing of the Brewer School Committee. The School Committee supported this fully.

Mr. Utterback will oversee the basketball component of the Winter Unified program, including the developmentc of student coaches, practice planning, game planning, set up and organization of game day needs.

Special thank you to the support from Nancy Snowdeal, Angela Moore (Director of Pupil Services), Franice Butler (Special Education Instructor) and Jamie Emerson (Special Education Instructor) for getting this program off the ground.

In the summer of 2021, Mr Utterback was recongized by the Maine Administrators of Services for Children with Disabilities as the "Special Education Support Staff of the Year" award. This was a testament to the work done in, and supported by Brewer around the Unified Athletics program.
